Copied this from my riddles book:

We call the people A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,and L.

We weigh ABCD and EFGH on the seesaw.

1. If ABCD = EFGH
we weigh ABC and IJK.

1-1. If ABC = IJK
L is the odd one out.

1-2. If ABC > IJK
we weigh I and J.

1-2-1: If I = J
K is the odd one out.

1-2-2: If I > J
I is the odd one out.

1-2-3: If I < J
J is the odd one out.

1-3. ABC < IJK
Do it the same way as shown above.

2. ABCD < EFGH
We weigh ABE and CDF.

2-1 ABE = CDF
We weigh G and H.

2-1-1 G > H
G is the odd one out.

2-1-2 G < H
H is the odd one out.

2-2 ABE < CDF
We weigh A and B.

2-2-1 A = B
F is the odd one out.

2-2-2 A < B
A is the odd one out.

2-2-3 A > B
B is the odd one out.

2-3 ABE > CDF
We weigh C and D.

2-3-1 C = D
E is the odd one out.

2-3-2 C < D
C is the odd one out.

2-3-3 C > D
D is the odd one out.

3. ABCD > EFGH:
Do it the same way as above.

Of course Dark couldn't solve this.

but how do you know if the guy you're looking for is heavier or lighter than the others??

Well, I don't. I mean, I could do additional math to do that, but this formula finds out who is the odd one out without finding out whether he is heavier or lighter.
